Erected 1930, the present M Street Bridge spans Rock Creek Valley at M Street between 26th and 28th Streets, NW, the site of the oldest bridge in the District of Columbia.
Although representative of mid 20th century bridge architecture in the United States, the design of M Street Bridge conflicted with architectural aesthetics for park bridge design established by the Commission of Fine Arts.
M Street Bridge was erected without the approval of the Commission of Fine Arts and remains the only non-arched bridge design in Rock Creek and Potomac Park.
EHT Traceries prepared the Historic American Engineering Record documentation for the M Street Bridge in conjunction with the research and preparation of the Historic Structure Report.
With the goal of documenting the bridge prior to any rehabilitation and alteration work, the HAER report includes a concise summary of the history and significance of the structure, and a descriptive record of existing conditions.
EHT Traceries used the original 1929 measured drawings to meet the drawing requirements and produced photographic documentation to HABS/HAER standards.
