BALTIMORE, MARYLAND

Built in 1938, Eastern High School is located in southeast Baltimore, on a site bound by Loch Raven Boulevard to the southeast and 33rd Street to the north.

The four-story high school has a steel and concrete frame with red brick cladding set in English bond with limestone trim.

It is presented in the Tudor Revival style, as characterized by the extensive use of brick punctuated by patterned brick panels and diapering; a stylized castellated parapet with a limestone cap; and banked groups of windows with cast stone mullions, a limestone casing and irregularly-spaced limestone tabs.

The interior was vacant for nearly 15 years, and conditions in the building deteriorated significantly with exposure to the elements and a lack of climate controls.

In 1996, Johns Hopkins University began a five-year rehabilitation program designed to re-use the historic building for modern educational purposes.

EHT Traceries submitted Part I of the tax certification application in 1996, establishing the building's historic merit and describing its character-defining features.

As the project resumed in 1998, the firm completed Part II of the application, discussing existing conditions and juxtaposing this information against the proposed rehabilitation work.

Upon receipt of the approvals for the Parts I and II, EHT Traceries prepared a National Register Nomination Form.

Part III was prepared upon completion of the project, close to the point when the building was put into service. This project was also eligible for Maryland's 25 percent Historic Tax Credit, as well as the Federal 20 percent credit.
