Tilden Gardens remains the grandest of the "grand Garden" apartments in the District of Columbia.

Designed by landscape designers Parks and Baxter, the site plan, landscaping and buildings were conceived as a holistic entity.

Architect Harry Edwards served as their associate architect. Composed of six buildings presented in the English Tudor Revival style, it is a sophisticated complex on a varied grade with extensive gardens, while incorporating below grade parking.

EHT Traceries conducted extensive research and historic documentation to meet requirements of the District of Columbia Historic Preservation Review Board and to assist project architects in clarifying the rationale behind design proposals.

Work included building permit research to locate original building permit, subsequent repair or alteration permits; location of historic images of the building, including photographs and advertisements in journals and newspapers; identification of original features; evaluation of impact of proposed alterations on the historic fabric of the building; and analysis of other 1920s-1930s garden apartments and their historic character.

The firm also worked with the architects to establish an appropriate approach for the historic rehabilitation of the building and recommended architectural treatments consistent with the historic character of the building and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, as well as having participated in presentations before the Historic Preservation Review Board.
