The City Post Office

WASHINGTON, D.C.

The City Post Office, located adjacent to Union Station in Washington, D.C., was designed in 1911 by D.H. Burnham & Company and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1987, the United States Postal Service held a national competition for the historic rehabilitation of the Beaux Arts building. Under the direction of Postal Square Associates (Gerald D. Hines Limited, managing partner), the project involved the restoration of the exterior and the significant interior spaces, as well as the alteration and adaptive reuse of secondary interior spaces.

EHT Traceries, Inc., serving as project architectural historian and preservation consultant, was selected to be part of the consulting team.

The firm was responsible for coordinating the review processes and the Section 106 Memorandum of Agreement, writing the Historic American Buildings Survey report and the Historic Structures Report, contributing to the Environmental Assessment Statement, and providing research and consultation on the restoration of interior and exterior design issues.

The firm also oversaw all reviews required by the D.C. Historic Preservation Office (serving as SHPO), the National Capital Planning Commission, the Commission of Fine Arts, and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.

Upon opening in September 1992, the City Post Office received the Building of the Year Award from the D.C. Preservation League.
