Research and Preservation Planning
University of Maryland at Baltimore - Historic Preservation Plan

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.

University of Maryland at Baltimore Campus Map, UMAB, 1995

The Baltimore City campus of the University of Maryland (UMAB) displays a wealth of architectural and historical resources representing the cultural heritage of both the City of Baltimore and the University of Maryland itself.

The campus is composed of a lively mix of early nineteenth and twentieth century commercial and industrial buildings, early loft structures, handsome cast-iron facades, rowhouses, theaters, fraternal organizations, and the academic buildings themselves.

EHT Traceries, in association with the architectural firm of Kann and Associates, prepared a Historic Preservation Plan for the UMAB campus. EHT Traceries' work focused on documentation and evaluation of buildings that have reached the fifty-year mark, and included on-site survey, archival research, preparation of Maryland Historical Trust Inventory forms, and an evaluation of significance for these resources.

The preparation of the Preservation Plan was intended to blend and integrate the growth objectives of UMAB into the context of this mixed-use community while maintaining the area's value and integrity.

As such, the Historic Preservation Plan supplements the UMAB Campus Master Plan. Designed as a general planning document, it identified and evaluated historic structures, offered specific management and treatment recommendations for historic properties, and addressed compliance requirements and processes for identified and potential undertakings on the UMAB campus.
